Course Description
Addendum to Course Description
This course is designed primarily for high school juniors and seniors who have volunteered to participate in training and leading groups of 6th graders attending outdoor school. Recommended for students exploring careers in education.
Intended Outcomes for the course
On completion of this course the student should be able to:
- Independently present and review prepared science lessons to groups of 6th graders.
- Lead discussions on outdoor science topics.
- Demonstrate professional behavior in a teaching environment.
- Work cooperatively with staff and students.
- Organize and lead 6th graders in everyday cabin living.
- Demonstrate effective communication skills, particularly speaking, listening and modeling.
- Use a variety of problem solving skills.
Course Activities and Design
The student's grade will be determined by a combination of daily observations, and weekly evaluations by site supervisors. Each student receives a written evaluation covering each of the outcome topics with ratings based on a rubric of specific observable behaviors. (See attached.)

Students are expected to achieve a score of 4 or higher on the rubric of course outcomes to demonstrate competency.
