Course Description

Fundamentals of hydronics systems, heat loss calculations, physical properties of water, types of boilers, piping systems and components for correct fluid flow including circulating pumps. Includes practical maintenance and component identification. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

This course will provide background information to help the service mechanic diagnose problems and become more competent. It will cover boilers from their beginning to present use. Primarily, heating and small power boilers, types of boilers, their use and limitation will be emphasized.
 

Intended Outcomes for the course

  • Describe types of boilers; their use and limitations.
  • Describe types of fuels; their use and limitations.
  • Demonstrate understanding of combustion systems and their application to the type of boiler.
  • Explain the need for and methods of boiler water treatment.
  • Explain types of combustion systems and their maintenance requirements.
  • Describe boiler safety devices, adjustment and testing.
  • Describe steam and hot water distribution systems and their components.
  • Explain pressure and temperature relationships of steam and hot water systems.

Course Activities and Design

This course is primarily lecture/discussion with audio visual materials and the possibility of field trips.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Procedures will be discussed at the first class session and the instructor's grading policy will be referenced on the class syllabus. Assessment will be based on attendance, participation, personal improvement, homework, quizzes, and the final examination.
