Course Description

Explores the various historical, social, economic, physical, and geographic factors that have contributed to the modern Oregon landscape. Delineates the major cultural and physical divisions within Oregon, in order to better understand the state's significant diversity. Emphasizes current issues and trends, and places the growth of Oregon into context with regional and national growth patterns. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of Geography 206 the student will be able to:

  •  Analyze how Oregonians interact with modern-day landscapes based on Oregon’s physical environment.
  • Evaluate how changing cultural, social, and economic characteristics of Oregon effect public policy, urban growth, and the physical environment.
  • Be a more educated consumer and more informed citizen through a deeper understanding of how Oregon’s economic development is being shaped by local, national, and even global factors.
  • Participate in local decisions about land use policy, urban growth, and economic development.

Social Inquiry and Analysis

Students completing an associate degree at Portland Community College will be able to apply methods of inquiry and analysis to examine social contexts and the diversity of human thought and experience.

  1. Impact of the Native Oregonians on the landscape
  2. Early Oregon: 1800-1830s
  3. Pioneer Oregon: 1840-1850s
  4. Expanding settlement: 1850s-1870s
  5. The Railroad Era: 1870s-1900
  6. Contemporary Oregon: 1900s- 2000s


Competencies and Skills:
 

  1. Analyze the ways in which the character of an Oregon county/region relates to its economic, political and population characteristics.
  2. Identify the distribution of different Oregon climates.
  3. Analyze the sequential occupancy of a selected Oregon settlement/county/region.
  4. Identify the physical processes that produce distinctive Oregon landforms.
  5. Demonstrate how Oregon population migrations are shaped by push and pull factors.
  6. Analyze the site and situation of selected Oregon settlements.
  7. Demonstrate how the functions of Oregon cities differ from those of towns and villages.
  8. Identify how the functions of present-day Oregon cities differ from those of cities in earlier times.
  9. Demonstrate how patterns of Oregon settlements are associated with the location of natural resources.
