Course Description
Addendum to Course Description
German Culture Through Film. Enhances understanding of German culture and contemporary society through analysis of cultural and social issues presented in seven German films. May explore issues including but not limited to: love as a medium for representing changing ideas in Germany, east vs. west, personal and national identity struggles, foreigners in Germany, stereotypes, roles of women in German society. Course conducted in English and all films with English subtitles.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Students will gain cultural awareness and appreciation for the following aspects of German culture and society:
a. Love as a medium for representing changing ideas in Germany
b. East vs. west
c. Personal and national identity struggles
d. Foreigners in Germany
e. Stereotypes
f. Roles of women in German society
Outcome Assessment Strategies
1. Active participation in small group discussion
2. Active participation in class discussions
3. Conceptual written tasks to assess understanding of cultural and social themes in background readings and films
4. Individual and group presentations
