Course Description

Covers the past, present, and future influences on the delivery of healthcare. Presents provider organizations and settings in healthcare, financing of healthcare, causes and characteristics of healthcare utilization in the Unites States, regulation and monitoring of healthcare systems and ethical issues associated with healthcare technology. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Summarize healthcare information related leadership roles.

  2. Explain how cultural issues affect health, healthcare quality, cost and health information management.

  3. Understand the importance of healthcare policy-making as it relates to the healthcare delivery system.

  4. Describe the different types of organizations, services, and personnel and their relationships across the healthcare delivery system.

  5. Explain the accreditation, licensure, and certification requirements of the healthcare organization.

  6. Define the current regulations in clinical classification systems.

Course Activities and Design

Health Care Delivery Systems is based on the traditional lecture/discussion format, with the content based on course objectives.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Students will demonstrate these learning outcomes by these tasks conducted individually and in cooperation with other students:

  1. Answer theoretical and application questions on information covered in the lecture, graded assignments and reading assignments.

  2. Demonstrate ability to research information on current trends in health care delivery and present it in written form.

1.0 HISTORY OF HEALTHCARE DELIVERY SYSTEMS
The goal is to familiarize the student with the historical developments which influenced the delivery of health care and the health industry.

2.0 ORGANIZATION OF HEALTH CARE FACILITIES
The goal is to understand the organizational structure of health care facilities.

3.0 FINANCING HEALTH CARE
The goal is to have students obtain a workable knowledge of health care financing in the United States.

4.0 GOVERNMENTAL AND STATE ROLES IN THE HEALTH CARE DELIVERY SYSTEM
The goal is to introduce the student to the federal and state governmental influence on the delivery of health care.

5.0 ACCREDITATION, CERTIFICATION, AND LICENSURE IN THE HEALTH CARE DELIVERY SYSTEM
The goal is to have students obtain an overview of the accrediting, certifying and licensing in the health care delivery system.

6.0 ORGANIZATIONS INFLUENCING THE HEALTH CARE DELIVERY SYSTEM
The goal is to familiarize students with the professional organizations that influence the delivery of health care.

7.0 CURRENT TRENDS IN HEALTH CARE DELIVERY SYSTEMS
The goal is to introduce the student to current trends and problems in the delivery of health care.
