Course Description
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon completion of the course students should be able to:
- Evaluate mechanical and aesthetic properties of lumber species used in fine furniture.

Demonstrate safe and appropriate use of the surfacer, edger, table saw, drill press, mortiser, basic hand tools, and finishing tools.
- Demonstrate the ability to follow-through on the creation of a piece of wood furniture from inception, design, drawing, fabrication, and finishing.
- Operate all power tools, hand tools and machinery to a best practices industry safety standard.

Goals for this course.
Students who complete this course will gain a positive approach to functioning safely in a furniture studio environment.
Students will gain skills in design development of custom made furniture.
Course Activities and Design
1. All students will build a solid hardwood piece of furniture that is prescribed by the instructor.
2. Instructional delivery will consist of in-studio demonstrations and team focused activities
3. Out of class assignments will involve researching notable furniture artists and evaluating their respective styles and techniques.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
Students are evaluated on the following aspects of woodworking:
1. Adherence to safe and appropriate standards for woodworking machinery usage
2. Reflective approach to skill development on a demonstrated positive trajectory
3. Successful completion of the assigned project with emphasis given to quality of workmanship and attention to detail.

Concept:
Successful construction of a work of fine furniture from raw lumber.
