Course Description

Covers designing interiors utilizing design and furniture arrangement skills, and developing skills in selection of furniture, floor coverings, wall and window treatments, color, fabric and pattern, lighting and accessories.

Addendum to Course Description

In this studio class, students will create professional presentation boards that demonstrate the solution to a challenging design problem utilizing a variety of drawings, materials and surfaces.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. Create professional presentation boards that demonstrate a functional and aesthetically pleasing design solution to a challenging design problem utilizing a variety of drawing types including plan, elevation, and axonometric.
  2. Create materials boards in formal presentation format that demonstrate the ability to coordinate color, pattern, and texture.
  3. Create an effective and well-planned design solution to a given design problem using the design concept and process.
  4. Enhance the design solution and presentation through successful space planning concepts, furniture planning, product research, and rendering techniques.

Course Activities and Design

This course will be presented by means of lecture, discussion, demonstrations, and guest lecturers. The student’s grade will be determined by a combination of studio exercises, testing, and class participation.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  1. Create a set of formal presentation boards that demonstrate a well-designed solution to a challenging problem utilizing plan, elevation, and axonometric drawings; material boards; simple black and white rendering techniques; matting and other professional techniques to communicate ideas and design solutions.
  2. Participate in informal and formal class design reviews/critiques to enhance design awareness and communication skills.
  3. Participate in, and contribute to, all class discussions.
  4. Complete practice sheets of hand written architectural lettering to enhance drawings and presentations.

Skills:
The student will develop the following skills through this course:

  • Use architectural drafting standards to create drawings of proposed plans and solutions
  • Develop skill in architectural hand lettering
  • Analyze and apply effective spatial design and furniture placement concepts to meet client needs
  • Develop skill in creating professional presentation boards utilizing a variety of mediums and methods
  • Develop skill in coordinating patterns, colors and textures
  • Draw a 3 dimensional drawing called an axonometric in order to understand the volume issues of space planning
  • Apply black and white pencil rendering techniques to enhance drawings to make them more effective communication tools

Hours: 10

  1. Create professional presentation boards that demonstrate a functional and aesthetically pleasing design solution to a challenging design problem utilizing a variety of drawings including plan, elevation, and axonometric.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the use of design concept and design process by creating an effective and well planned solution to a given design problem.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of successful space planning concepts, furniture planning, product research, and rendering techniques to enhance the design solution and presentation.

  • Students construct drafted documents throughout the term which require architectural drafting standards and dimensioning with scale
  • integers.
  • Drawing types include plan, elevation and axonometric.
  • All of the required drawings require the use of scaled design appropriate to drawing type.

  1. Create professional presentation boards that demonstrate a functional and aesthetically pleasing design solution to a challenging design problem utilizing a variety of drawings including plan, elevation, and axonometric.
  2. Create materials boards in formal presentation format that demonstrate the ability to coordinate color, pattern, and texture.
  3. Demonstrate skills in verbal communication by presenting the design solution to others in both formal and informal formats.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of the use of design concept and design process by creating an effective and well planned solution to a given design problem.

  • Students are required to demonstrate skills in verbal communication by presenting the design solution to others.
  • Communication will be done verbally as well as visually.
  • Visual communication through the use of architectural drawings, diagrams and concept development.

Human Relations
Hours: 20

  1. Create professional presentation boards that demonstrate a functional and aesthetically pleasing design solution to a challenging design problem utilizing a variety of drawings including plan, elevation, and axonometric.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the use of design concept and design process by creating an effective and well planned solution to a given design problem.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of successful space planning concepts, furniture planning, product research, and rendering techniques to enhance the design solution and presentation.

  • Students are required to demonstrate knowledge of user needs and profiles.
  • Students study the impact of their design on the users (clients) for this studio project.
  • Students must comprehend the meaning of their design on the health, safety and welfare of the users (clients) of their design.
