Course Description

Accelerated course designed for interpreting students. Focuses on grammar features, non-manual behaviors and higher language skill development in ASL. Admission into Sign Language Interpretation program and department permission required.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

--Act with respect, knowledge and understanding of Deaf people and
ASL with an appreciation for their linguistic and cultural diversity
--Understand and explain grammar features and non-manual
behaviors of ASL
--Produce signs, fingerspelled words and numbers with 70 percent
accuracy
--Use ASL numbering systems correctly and fingerspelling when it is
appropriate
--Describe and identify things using classifiers and space
--Discuss various current issues from newspaper, magazine, or
internet articles
--Develop skill in discussing opinions on various current issues
--Develop skill in arguing and/or debating on various current issues
--Develop skill listening and responding or asking questions culturally
appropriate manner
--Develop skill giving feedback and criticism to peersin a nonthreatening
way
--Discuss and apply various grammar features in context appropriately
--Continue to apply language learning skills outside the classroom

Course Activities and Design

This course will include live and videotaped demonstrations, lectures,


 

drills, videotapes, small group discussions, student presentations, and


 

other hands-on activities.

Outcome Assessment Strategies


Assessment strategies include observation of students' in-class receptive and expressive skill in ASL, written quizzes on receptive skill, knowledge of grammar features, and videotaping of students' expressive skill in ASL.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)


Includes all or most of the following:

  • Various topics using classifiers and space appropriately in the context
  • Various topics and current issues related to politics will be discussed
  • Parliamentary procedures and terminology will be discussed and learn how to run a mock meeting
  • Pledge of allegiance to the Flag and National Anthem will be discussed and practiced signing them
  • Various current issues will analyzed and how to express these topics will be discussed
  • Application of grammar features and non-manual behaviors will be analyzed and discussed
  • Techniques for giving feedback and criticism in a non-threatening way
