Course Description

Provides an opportunity to practice interpreting in a classroom setting where interpreting services are not needed. Develops simultaneous interpreting skills and stamina.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Prepare for interpreting in an ongoing assignment.
  • Apply techniques for process management in order to provide a fluent and accurate interpretation.
  • Sustain interpreting for a full 50 minute class period.
  • Produce an accurate interpretation of classroom discourse.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the logistics involved in the location of interpreters in a given environment. 
  • Calculate time spent preparing, interpreting, observing, and analyzing. 

Course Activities and Design

This course will consist of the following activities:

  • On-going interpreting placements in a classroom at Sylvania Campus at Portland Community College.
  • Communicate with placement classroom instructors in a professional manner.
  • Weekly discussion with instructor to discuss and analyze assignments.
  • Practice working with teams and setting up the position of the interpreters appropriately for the setting
  • Maintain a log of hours spent preparing for assignments, tutoring hours, observation hours, and interpreting hours. 

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Student outcomes will be assessed by the following: 

  • Students must accumulate and document a minimum of 60 hours in order to be awarded a grade.
  • Written journal entries will be evaluated on completeness of information, thoroughness, and student self-assessments.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

Course content includes:

  • Continued development of expressive and receptive simultaneous interpreting skills.
  • Practice successful communication between the student interpreter and team, and presenter.
  • Establish the appropriate location of an interpreter in a given situation.
  • Use of appropriate professional dress and demeanor, interpreting demeanor Interpreting techniques, including preparation, processing, clarification techniques, and production of an interpretation.
  • Develop poise and comfort when interpreting in front of an audience.
  • Discussing and analyzing personal skill development weekly journals.
  • Calculating time spent preparing for, discussing, and performing an interpretation.

Hours: 10

  • Demonstrate understanding of the logistics involved in the location of interpreters in a given environment. 
  • Calculate time spent preparing, interpreting, observing, and analyzing. 

This course will consist of the following activities:

  • Calculate time spent preparing for, discussing, and performing an interpretation in preparation of invoicing as a professional.
  • For each assignment, establish the best location for the interpreters given the number of participants. Calculate angles necessary for the speaker, the audience, and the interpreter's lines of sight. 
  • Maintain a log of hours spent preparing for assignments, tutoring hours, observation hours, and interpreting hours. 

Communication
Hours: 20

  • Prepare for a interpreting in an ongoing assignment.

  • Discuss and analyze personal skill development in a weekly journal.
  • Self-assess ways to improve the listening/comprehending of the source message and the production of the target message.
  • Negotiate and manage team communication before, during, and after an interpretation.

Human Relations
Hours: 20

  • Prepare for a interpreting in an ongoing assignment.
  • Produce an accurate interpretation of classroom discourse.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the logistics involved in the location of interpreters in a given environment. 

This course will consist of the following activities:

  • Communicate with the placement classroom instructor throughout the term in a professionally, culturally appropriate manner.
  • Interact with the students at the placement in a professional, respectful, and culturally appropriate manner.
