Course Description

Introduces botany and biology of plant physiology. Includes plant growth and reaction to nutrients, light, air, water, pests, and diseases. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

This class is designed to provide the beginning landscape student with basic knowledge of plant anatomy, physiology and classification.  The effects of the environment on plant growth and development are explored. Material is presented by lecture, visual aids and hands-on laboratory experiences.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course the students will be able to:

  • Identify the parts and function of woody and herbaceous plants including parts of the roots, stem, leaves, and flowers.
  • Use established taxonomic schemes in identifying, classifying, describing, and studying plants.
  • Employ an understanding of plant anatomy and physiology in the care and management of landscape plants.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Evaluation will be based on written assignments from laboratory experiences that deal with scientific observation and data gathering; one project assignment that is either a written report or oral presentation on a specific horticulture topic that relates to botanical principles and practices; two written mid-term exams and a written comprehensive final exam.
