Course Description
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon completion of the course students should be able to:
- Manage client interactions on a landscape project.
- Work with a diverse team to plan, stage, and implement a landscape design and build project.
- Provide leadership for their portion of a landscape project.
- Communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders to complete a landscape project.
Aspirational Goals
Gain confidence and experience in working as a team member to design and implement a real world landscape design/build project.
Course Activities and Design
The instructor finds a real-world site and client for design and construction. During the lab period, the Instructor guides students through the creation of a landscape design through discussion, critique and verbal feedback. The instructor then prepares for the real-world installation by ordering and staging materials and preparing the site for construction. During the lab period, the Instructor teaches landscape construction skills through active demonstrations in real time. Students then build the project with the Instructor's guidance and receive verbal feedback as they work. The instructor evaluates the projects outside of class time—providing a score and feedback on the design and content, completeness and professionalism.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
Completion of assigned tasks.
Weekly team reports.
Weekly debriefings (wrap-ups) that highlight new learning as the process develops.
Reflection paper near the end of the term that includes evaluation of the team, the process and one's self.
Evaluation of the final project.
