Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

1. Effectively communicate concepts in anatomy and pathophysiology through verbal and written means in both individual and small-group settings.
2. Understand risk factors of disease and how they relate to disease processes.
3. Understand how the various organ systems are interrelated, and use this understanding to promote a whole-body approach towards the evaluation and treatment of patients.
4. Understand the basis for select laboratory tests and other diagnostic procedures.
5. Make correlations between pathophysiology and clinical skills learned in the medical assisting program.
6. Apply concepts learned in the classroom toward successful clinical problem-solving and effective patient care.

 
Students learning outcomes will be assessed by either exams, assignments, quizzes, small or large group discussions. Answer theoretical and application multiple choice questions on information covered in the lecture and reading assignments. Complete a variety of work assignments to demonstrate understanding of basic concepts. Below are the CAAHEP learning outcomes for this course. 

Anatomy & Physiology:

Identify common pathology related to each body system including signs, symptoms, etiology, diagnostic measures and treatment modalities, including CLIA-waived tests associated with common diseases.

Nutrition:

Identify the special dietary needs for: weight control, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, cancer, lactose sensitivity, gluten-free, and food allergies.

HEREDITY AND FAMILY HISTORY AND THEIR EFFECTS ON THE HUMAN BODY

Review anatomy and pathophysiology concepts pertaining to familial and congenital factors, and relate these to common disorders affecting various body systems.

THE AGING PROCESS AND THE EFFECTS ON THE HUMAN BODY

Review anatomy and pathophysiology concepts pertaining to age and the aging process, and relate these to common disorders affecting various body systems.

INFECTION AND THE EFFECTS ON THE HUMAN BODY

Review pathophysiology of infectious agents including bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa and parasites, and relate these agents to common pathological disorders affecting various body systems.

IMMUNE SYSTEM DYSFUNCTION AND THE EFFECTS ON THE HUMAN BODY

Review anatomy and pathophysiology concepts pertaining to the immune system, hypersensitivity and immunodeficiency conditions, and relate these to common disorders affecting various body systems.

CANCER AND THE EFFECTS ON THE HUMAN BODY

Review pathophysiology of neoplasm growth, benign and malignant, risk factors which increase chance of neoplasm development, and relate these concepts to neoplastic diseases affecting various body systems.
