Course Description

Introduces new concepts in clinical laboratory medicine. Introduces professional issues in preparation for certification examinations. Explores techniques for writing standard operating procedures. Acceptance into second year of MLT Program required. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

The student will continue to develop the skills, knowledge, and attitude required to function in a professional manner in the clinical laboratory setting as a health care professional. In addition, students will explore new concepts in health care and the clinical sciences. Laboratory exercises are not normally included in this course.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion students should be able to:
 
1. Work within the ethical and professional parameters of the medical laboratory profession.
2. Use an understanding of theoretical and procedural materials to prepare for board certification examinations.

Course Activities and Design

The material in this course will be presented in a distance-learning format. Instruction may consist of lecture, discussion, web-based instructional media (tutorials, animations, videos, etc.) and other educationally sound practices.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

The instructor will outline the methods used to evaluate student progress and the criteria for assigning a grade at the beginning of the course. Assessment methods may include written and practical examinations. Evaluation of problem solving skills, teamwork, attendance, and communication skills may also be included.

    • Theme 1: Expand on Cultivation of Professional Development, including
      • Display the attitude and traits expected of a clinical laboratory professional
      • Demonstrate competent written, listening and oral communication skills as expected of the clinical laboratory professional
      • Discuss the roles of various health care professionals and how they function as a part of the larger health care team
    • Theme 2: Laboratory Knowledge, Procedures, and Processes, including
      • Demonstrate understanding of basic laboratory functions including lab math, quality assurance, quality control, safety, and standard operating procedures
      • Correlate laboratory findings with theory and principles
      • Review theoretical and procedural materials to prepare for certification examinations
    • Theme 3: Other Topics
      • Discuss new concepts and advances in health care and how these issues impact the clinical laboratory
      • Perform research using the library and the Internet. Learn to distinguish valid research sources
