Course Description
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:
- Record sound for video using microphones, mixers, and recorders.
- Determine solutions for challenging recording environments.
- Assess sound recordings and identify areas of potential or needed improvement.
- Use industry-standard methods for sound editing and sound design for video projects.
- Finalize sound for video projects to comply with distribution and industry standards.
Aspirational Goals
Students will be introduced to broad skills in sound production and post
production for multiple types of multimedia projects. This includes best practices in field
sound recording for various multimedia projects including microphone selection and use, field
recording, on-set recording for camera.
Develop skills in post production sound, including sound editing, mixing, sound design, and distribution.
Course Activities and Design
Class time will consist of technical and equipment demonstrations, media capture and editing workshops, viewing and discussing of work by diverse and relevant contemporary artists, and time for feedback and critique of students’ work. They will use the skills learned in class to tell their own stories and push their expressive limits.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
Assessment will be based upon a combination of in-class work, reflections, examinations, and skills demonstrated in assigned projects. Determination of problem-solving skills, and communication skills may also be included.
Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)
Production:
- What the various sound jobs are on a set
- How to select and ideally place microphones
- How to operate a mixer and recording equipment
Post-production:
- What the various sound jobs are in post-production (and how you’ll do them all for indie jobs)
- How to edit dialogue for clarity
- How to edit sound effects
- How to perform and record foley
- How to enhance the story through sound design
- How to combine all of these elements during the re-recording mix and delivery
