Course Description

This 10-hour workshop focuses on how to cope more effectively and constructively with angry feelings. Also includes understanding the impact anger has on ourselves and others; learning how to gain control over our reaction to anger-provoking situations; and converting angry feelings into positive action. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

  • Identify anger styles and how they impact personal lives and the workplace.
  • Describe what triggers angry responses and explain ways to diffuse them.
  • Demonstrate techniques to reinforce healthy expressions of anger.
  • Explain how increasing self-awareness influences behavior
  • Describe steps to take when confronted with an angry person.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  • Describe a situation in which one or more parties demonstrate angry behavior and explain the steps for diffusing the situation.
  • Demonstrate "modeling" behavior techniques for reinforcing appropriate expressions of anger.
  • Identify appropriate and inappropriate expressions of anger and describe how to handle each.
  • Develop a personal improvement plan to help convert anger into positive actions.
  • Apply learned skills through an outside project.

CONCEPTS, THEMES, ISSUES
General Concepts
Effectively handling and controlling anger in the workplace impacts productivity and safety. One approach is by applying techniques for reinforcing positive expression.

Themes
There are productive steps for turning anger into positive energy which can be understood by identifying key traits that influence the anger management process.

Issues
Unmanaged expression of anger can be dangerous in the workplace. Using self-control and creating a positive environment can make handling differences of opinion easier.
