Course Description

This 10-hour workshop focuses on the cornerstone of behavior: self-esteem. Topics include learning how self-esteem affects our relationships, our ability to solve problems and set goals, our work performance, and our health. Emphasizes understanding the importance of maintaining a healthy self-esteem when handling conflict and many major dilemmas common to modern life. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

  • Describe ways to develop a healthy self-concept.
  • Define the characteristics of destructive behavior and explain how to replace this behavior with constructive, positive and pro-active patterns.
  • Explain the process for unblocking negative thoughts using creative methods.
  • Practice methods for setting realistic personal and professional goals.
  • Practice approaches to conflict resolution that show sensitivity for each person’s self-esteem.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  • Identify negative behavioral patterns in self and select ways to overcoming them.
  • Describe how overcoming fear and risk influence positive development of self-esteem.
  • Develop a plan setting several realistic personal and professional goals.
  • Develop an action plan for maintaining a healthy self-concept.
  • Apply learned skills through an outside project.

COMPETENCIES/SKILLS:

  • Identify barriers such as negative self-talk and make a plan to overcome them.
  • Successfully handle an interpersonal conflict showing respect for the other’s self-esteem.
  • Apply the necessary steps for understanding failure and turning it into success.
  • Demonstrate how to help an individual with low self-esteem raise it to a more positive level.
  • Develop action steps for team problem solving that encourages respect for the individual.

General Concepts
Self-respect is a key element in developing win-win relationships.
Setting realistic personal and professional goals can be a self-esteem building process.
Themes
Maintaining balance contributes to positive self-esteem. Failure can become an asset when addressed positively. Change requires mental and physical effort.
Issues
Personal agendas may interfere with positive self-talk. Overcoming negative behaviors is on on-going process. Negative thoughts interfere with relationships, problem solving, work performance, and health.
