Course Description
Addendum to Course Description
The first half of the term will focus exclusively on ear training. By listening to music examples from various styles of music: students will learn how to count, identify meter, identify accents within the bar and learn to notate and perform basic rhythms for Rock, Jazz, R & B, Funk and Latin music. For the second half of the term, students will be divided into small ensembles and work on performing rhythms utilizing various percussion instruments.
Intended Outcomes for the course
The material for this class will be presented in a lecture/lab format. Class time will be evenly divided between ear training and performance. Extensive use of recorded music examples will be used to develop ear-training skills. Various percussion instruments will be provided to facilitate group performance. Class participation is prerequisite.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
At the beginning of the course, the instructor will detail the methods used to evaluate student progress and the criteria for assigning a course grade. The methods may include one or more of the following tools: examinations, quizzes, homework assignments and musical performance evaluation.
Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)
At the end of this course students will be able to:
- Identify by ear - simple and compound meters
- Identify by ear and notate accents
- Understand subdivisions of quarter, eighth, sixteenth and triplet values
- Associate rhythms with specific styles of music
- Notate basic rhythms for Rock, Jazz, R&B and Latin music
- Utilize basic techniques to transcribe music
- Perform specific rhythms on percussion instruments with a sensitivity to musicality and style
