The student will learn intermediate and advanced intermediate techniques of playing guitar and bass.

1. The student will be able to play diatonic chords in two positions.
2. The student will be able to play chord progressions up and down the neck.
3. The student will be able to strum patterns for a variety of styles.
4. The student will be able to use chord substitution for a variety of chord progressions.
5. The student will be able to solo over tonal centers using forms of the major scale.
6. The student will be able to create bass lines using scale tones and passing tones for a variety of styles and rhythms.
7. The student will be able to play slide guitar in standard and Open D tunings.

The type of assessment will be determined by the individual instructor. Assessment methods may include:

1. Group activity
2. In-class participation
3. Qualitative and/or quantitative examinations
4. Practice diary
5. Student self-evaluation

7. Improvisation and developing a solo using tonal centers
8. Walking bass lines - passing and leading tones
9. Open D tuning
10. Slide guitar in Open D and standard tuning
11. Developing vibrato and use of common effects
12. Practice routines and aids

COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS

1. Perform chord progressions using diatonic chords up and down the neck.
2. Use appropriate strumming and picking patterns to comp in a variety of styles.
3. Use chord substitution to create harmonic interest.
4. Improvise solo lines using forms of the major scale over tonal centers.
5. Create bass lines using scale tones and leading and passing tones for a variety of styles.
6. Play the guitar in Open D tuning.
7. Play slide guitar in Open D and standard tunings.
