Course Description
Covers common body interfaces across sectors and how to design device prototypes for them. Introduces principles of body interface design for artistic and expressive output. Reviews the future of body interfaces, with emphasis on contemporary research. Audit available.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon completion of the course students should be able to:
- Identify various body interfaces in the world.
- Articulate how the body as an interface presents design challenges and opportunities distinct from those posed by conventional hardware interfaces.
- Design a wearable, embeddable, or computer vision device, including a functional description, materials needed, inputs and outputs of the device, coding logic, user stories, and criteria for success.
- Program and build a functional prototype of a wearable, embeddable, or computer vision device.
- Validate and iterate upon designs and prototypes, responding to design, testing, and user feedback.
Course Activities and Design
Intended for intermediate and advanced students of Creative Coding & Immersive Technologies, this course blends design theory (lecture) and rapid prototyping (projects).
Outcome Assessment Strategies
- Student presentations
- Student projects
- Written documents (statements, essays, plans etc.)
Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)
- Best practices for building body-connected interfaces with physical components, considering topics such as ergonomics and safety. Contrast manual modes with automation.
- Sensory systems that alter our conscious and subconscious responses.
- Body-mounted sensors that capture information from a distance.
- Ethics of human-computer interaction and body-centric devices.
