Course Description

Fundamental skills in audio engineering including a mixture of theory and practical application of current recording technology. Includes fundamental acoustics, microphone placement, editing, multi-track recording, mix-down, signal processing, Midi, and time code synchronization. Focuses on commercials, music recording and sound tracks for visual media. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

Studio recording II is designed to examine subjects, touched upon in MUS 223, in greater detail. In the labs, practical application of newly learned tracking and mixing techniques augment understanding by providing audio examples created by the students. Regular critiquing by classmates reinforces concepts.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Prepares student for MUS 225 and full recording project. Student will understand how to electrically complete a studio setup eliminating noise and potential problems. They will perform second engineer duties at job level.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Students will be retested for their better understanding of recording physics and knowledge of effects by successfully completing a final written exam. Labs are assessed on a point accumulation system based on people skills, task competency and critiques.

COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:

  1. Perform calibration of multi-track tape recorder.
  2. Perform signal routing for mixing techniques and sonic results.
  3. Understand signal flow theory used as an art form
  4. Identify Frequencies
  5. Identify phase anomalies
  6. Demonstrate critical listening of subtle recorded sounds and noise
  7. Microphone selection and placement for enhanced stereo fields
  8. Complete "live" 2 track recordings.
  9. Demonstrate improved people management skills
