Mus 210 is the third term of a 3 term sequence. This course approaches the present day jazz art-form through its progression from the blues. The class will study the construction of jazz and its vrious formats. Also, the class will enhance its appreciation of the art-form through dirct exposure to the music, receive historical background and examine its contribution to the international world of music.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have satisfactorily accomplished the goals and objectives listed in the course content guide. Course content guides are developed by college wide faculty and approved by managements.

1.0 Ragtime: Precursor of Jazz

Instructional Goal

The goal is to examine the musical structure and historical background of ragtime.

Objectives:

1.1 Be familiar with the historical background of various ragtime composers and performing artists.

1.2 Understand the contributions to American musical traditions

1.3 Be familiar with well-known ragtime selections.

2.0 Development of Jazz in New Orleans

Instructional Goal

The goal is to examine the development of jazz from ragtime in New Orleans

Objectives:

2.1 Be familiar with new innovations in musical structure.

2.2 Be familiar with the style of the original Dixieland Band

2.3 Be familiar with composers and performing artists that were innovators of the New Orleans jazz style

3.0 Development of Jazz in Chicago

Instructional Goal

The goal is to be familiar with the innovative developments in Chicago

Objectives

3.1 Understand the emergence of the big band

3.2 Be familiar with the innovative composers and performing artists of the Chicago style.

4.0 The Swing Era

Instructional Goal:

The goal is to examine the elements of the Swing Era

Objectives:

4.1. Understand what elements constitute the term 'Swing'

4.2 Be familiar with artists that were instrumental in bringing about 'swing' music.

5.0 Bebop

Instructional Goal:

The goal is to become familiar with the term 'Bebop' and all of its ramifications.

5.1 Understand why Bebop is referred to as the most revolutionary period in the historical development of Jazz.

5.2 Be familiar with musical works in this style

5.3 Acquire the listening skills to be able to recognize this style of jazz.

5.4 Understand the antisocial attitudes of this style.

5.5 Be familiar with composers and artists that were innovators of this style

6.0 Progressive Jazz, Cool and Hard Bop

Instructional Goal:

The goal is to become familiar with these jazz art-forms

Objectives:

6.1 Understand the difference between these jazz styles

6.2 Be able to identify works that are performed in the various jazz styles

6.3 Be familiar with artists that were innovators of the various jazz styles

7.0 Present-day Jazz Art-form

Instructional Goal

The goal is to become familiar with the stylistic traits of today's jazz

Objective:

7.1 Become familiar with composers and performing artists that are innovators of today's jazz style and its counterparts.

7.2 Be familiar with the contributions that jazz has given to the world.

7.3 Be familiar with well-known works to acquire an appreciation of today's jazz art-form.

This course will consist of lectures, class and special panel discussions, musical demonstrations and audio-visual components.

This course will provide the student with the historical background and musical knowledge necessary to solidify an appreciation for the jazz art-form.

Evaluation procedures will be discussed during the first class meeting.
