Course Description

Explores appropriate exercises, body mechanics, posture, and other techniques for prevention and relief of back pain. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to: 

  1. Improve physical conditioning as it relates to the core and back.
  2. Apply principles of back care to personal exercise and fitness programming.

Course Activities and Design

Most classes include group exercise sessions. Videos, short lectures and discussions, and fitness assessments are included.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  1. Demonstrate proper body mechanics:
    1. In stretching
    2. In muscular endurance and strength programs
    3. In moving objects
    4. In sitting
  2. Demonstrate a balanced strengthening and stretching program
  3. Identify key body areas and corrective exercises involved in back problems
  4. Identify common postural problems and corrective exercises
