Course Description

Covers proper use of all clubs under variable conditions. Focuses on rules, etiquette and course management. Requires playing a few rounds of golf outside of class. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able:

  • Apply a deeper understanding the techniques needed in the sport of golf
  • Apply a increased understanding of the fundamental rules, strategies and tactics of the sport of golf
  • Continued development of life-long fitness, health and wellness.

Course Activities and Design

Reviews basic technique and rules.  Includes more advanced skills and actual course play.  Format includes lectures, demonstrations, drills, practice and reading assignments.  Meets off-campus.
 

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Specific grading policies will be provided verbally and in a handout during the first week of the term. 
    
 

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

1.0 RULES AND ETIQUETTE
Instructional Goal: 
To increase knowledge, understanding and use of golf rules and
etiquette.
Objectives:
     1.1  Increase knowledge, understanding and use of golf rules
          an etiquette successfully by:
          a.  Studying rules and etiquette handouts
          b.  Listening to and participating in rules and
              etiquette discussions
          c.  Preparing for and taking a rules and etiquette
              test
          d.  Observing rules and etiquette while playing on a
              course
2.0 EQUIPMENT 
Instructional Goal:
To develop knowledge and skills necessary to caring for and using
golf equipment.
Objectives:
     2.1  Caring for and using equipment successfully by:
          a.  Protecting equipment from weather
          b.  Frequent checking for deterioration
          c.  Cleaning after use
          d.  Storing properly
          e.  Avoiding misuse
          f.  Choosing appropriate equipment
    
3.0 SWINGING
Instructional Goal:
To increase knowledge and skills necessary for swinging a golf
club.
Objectives:
     3.1  Swing a golf club successfully by:
          a.  Developing needed strength and flexibility  
          b.  Improving coordination
          c.  Assuming a correct grip
          d.  Using a balanced stance and correct body posture
          e.  Learning to relax
          f.  Developing mental control
          g.  Assuming proper and consistent ball-body
              alignment
          h.  Building a correct back swing
          i.  Forming an appropriate down swing 
          j.  Following through adequately
    
4.0  MODIFIED SHOTS
Instructional Goal:
To develop knowledge and skills necessary to hit modified shots.
Objectives:
     4.1  Hitting modified shots successfully by knowing how to hit:
          a.  Uphill lies
          b.  Downhill lies
          c.  Sidehill lies
          d.  Tall grass lies
          e.  Bare ground lies
          f.  Water lies
          g.  Tree and other obstruction lies
          h.  Sand lies
          i.  Dirt lies
          j.  Weather-affected shots
5.0  PUTTING
Instructional Goal:
To develop knowledge and skills necessary to putt.
Objectives:
     5.1  Putting successfully by:
          a.  Choosing a proper putter
          b.  Learning to "read" greens
          c.  Developing a positive attitude
          d.  Concentrating
          e.  Assuming a proper grip
          f.  Using a balanced stance and body posture
          g.  Keeping head and body steady
