Course Description

Introduces two racquet sport games: pickleball and badminton. Emphasizes rules, equipment, technique and strategy for both singles and doubles play. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the basic skills and game play of badminton and pickleball.
  • Recognize benefits of racquet sports and associated contributions to life long fitness.
  • Apply the rules of pickleball and badminton in a game situation.

Course Activities and Design

Skills will be discussed, defined, and demonstrated. Students will work individually, in pairs and in groups. Most class time spent in competition. Needed equipment will be provided.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

The grade will be determined in basically the same way for each
level.

  3. Written quiz

  2. GROUND STROKES

  3. BASIC STROKE SKILLS
    1. Instructional Goal:
      1. To introduce basic skills of sports.
    2. Objectives:
      1. The serve
      2. Forecourt play/backcourt play
      3. Smash

      5. Overhead smash
      6. Lob
      7. Drive
      8. Ceiling shot/clear
  4. SINGLES COURT STRATEGY
    1. Instructional Goal:
      1. To introduce basic singles strategy.
    2. Objectives:
      1. Court position
      2. Rules, scoring
  5. DOUBLES COURT STRATEGY
    1. Instructional Goal:
      1. To introduce basic doubles strategy.
    2. Objectives:
      1. Court position
      2. Serving positions
      3. Receiving positions
  6. ALTERNATIVE GAME PLAY
    1. Instructional Goal:
      1. To introduce alternative game play.
    2. Objectives:
      1. Cut-throat (related more to racquetball)
      2. Practice
      3. Group competition
