Course Description

Reviews strokes, strategies, and skills in singles and doubles play. Emphasizes recreational and competitive play. Recommended: Beginning table tennis skills. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Participate in table tennis as both a sport and as a method of developing physical fitness.
  • Further apply the fundamental rules, strategies and tactics of the sport of table tennis at an intermediate level.
  • Continue to increase of the levels of fitness, agility, coordination and flexibility by playing table tennis.
  • Develop a life-long fitness, health and wellness strategy that incorporates participation in table tennis.

Course Activities and Design

Uses lecture, demonstration, individual instruction, and round-robin competition. Class will progress from a review of rules and skills, to round-robin and final class tournament.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Grades will be based upon the following:
 

  1. Attendance-double emphasis on class tournament
  2. Participation
  3. Completion of all assigned matches
  4. Improvement-measured weekly and at the class tournament

  1. SELECTION OF EQUIPMENT
    1. Instructional Goal: 
      1. To enable the student to be aware of the various styles of paddles and rubber best suited to the various styles of play, and to select the proper grip.
    2. Objectives:
      1. To identify the right paddle and rubber for each student.
      2. To select the right grip for the student.
        1. Hand shake
        2. Pen hold
        3. Seemiller grip 
  2. RULES OF PLAY 
    1. Instructional Goal:
      1. To develop an understanding and applications of the rules of play.
    2. Objectives: 
      1. To identify the elements of a proper serve.
        1. Ball presented in an open play
        2. Ball presented above table
        3. Ball presented behind end-line
        4. Ball toss of 6 inches 
      2. To identify and remember each rule.
        1. Scoring
        2. Net serve
        3. Net ball
        4. Edge ball
        5. A let
        6. Block rule
        7. Free hand on the table 
  3. STROKES 
    1. Instructional Goal:
      1. To identify proper ability to use all basic strokes.
    2. Objectives:
      1. To identify and practice each of the basic strokes.
        1. Drive
        2. Smash
        3. Loop
        4. Push
        5. Chop
        6. Block
      2. To identify and practice the four elements of any stroke.
        1. Ready position
        2. Step into the stroke
        3. Follow through
        4. Recover
      3. To identify and practice the effects of various spins, whether given or received.
        1. Topspin
        2. Underspin
        3. Side spin
        4. No spin
  4. FOOTWORK
    1. Instructional Goal:
      1. To develop effective footwork.
    2. Objectives:
      1. To identify and practice footwork techniques for strokes.
        1. Basic table position
        2. Receiving serve
        3. Side to side
        4. Front to back
        5. Back to front
        6. Basic footwork for each of the six basic strokes
  5. ETIQUETTE
    1. Instructional Goal:
      1. To learn the rules of table tennis etiquette.
    2. Objectives:
      1. To identify the proper social framework in which to play.
        1. When to call a let
        2. Allowing room for other matches
        3. Continuance of play
  6. RECREATIONAL VALUE
    1. Instructional Goal:
      1. To develop the recreational value involved in table tennis.
    2. Objectives:
      1. To identify things that make table tennis fun as a recreational sport.

        4. Lack of serious injuries
