Course Description
Build on knowledge and skill areas covered in Judo I. Audit available.
Addendum to Course Description
Judo gi (uniform) required. Rings, earrings and body piercings are not allowed during physical participation due to potential injury to other students or self.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

CONCEPTS, THEMES, ISSUES (TOPICAL AREAS):
- Warm-ups and cool-downs
- Conditioning, stretching, and endurance exercises
- Etiquette and discipline
- Difference between classical and modern competition (Olympic) Judo
- Basic body movement (tai sabaki)
- Combination techniques, countering, and blocking throws
- Standing to grappling transitions
- Mat transitions, timing
- Controlled arm locks (kansetzu waza)
- Grips and breaking grips
- Analysis of weakness (direction of throws)
- Tournament scoring, training and strategies
- Sacrifice techniques
- Mental training and visualization
- Japanese words and phrases for Judo
- Safety concerns
COMPETENCIES/SKILLS:
- Practice warm-ups and cool-downs
- Select appropriate conditioning, stretching, and endurance exercises
- Understand the importance of bowing etiquette/discipline
- Demonstrate tumbling and controlled falling techniques (ukemi)
- Demonstrate off-balancing techniques (kuzushi)
- Demonstrate throwing techniques (tachiwaza - foot/leg throws, hand/arm throws, hip throws) for Judo II
- Show mat work, transitions, and hold downs (newaza)
- Demonstrate choking (shime waza), and controlled arm locks (kansetzu waza)
- Demonstrate grips, sacrifice techniques
- Understand basic Japanese words and phrases as used in Judo
- Demonstrate Kata form (controlled practice of key elements of Judo II)
