Course Description
Addendum to Course Description
Student provides appropriate clothing, shoes, and equipment. Backpack, water bottle/bladder, personal first aid, and hiking or trail shoes required.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

Improve physical conditioning through participation in advanced hiking activities.

Utilize advanced hiking skills and concepts when planning and executing all day or multiple day hikes.

Apply map, compass, and GPS skills when making route decisions before and during hiking activities.

Integrate safe, enjoyable, and environmentally conscious hiking into a lifelong fitness, health, and wellness program.
Course Activities and Design
An on-campus orientation or initial class meeting and off-campus hikes are required for this course. Instructional strategies include lecture, small group work, group discussion, classroom activities, online or electronic activities/discussions/assignments, physical skill practice, fitness level assessment, and group hiking activities.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)
SUBJECT MATTER: CONCEPTS, THEMES, ISSUES (TOPICAL AREAS)
- Personal and group hiking warm-up, cool-down, and stretching
- Fitness training for advanced hiking and longer hikes
- Benefits of hiking for lifelong fitness and wellness
- Personal awareness and safety when hiking (communication, emergency plans)
- Advanced hiking trip planning (longer route considerations, proper gear, clothing, footwear, first aid, food, water)
- Wilderness injury prevention and first aid
- Advanced hiking techniques (use of trekking poles, safety equipment)
- Environmental awareness (“Leave no trace”, weather, trail conditions)
- Orienteering with maps, compass, and GPS technologies
COMPETENCIES/SKILLS:
- Lead self and/or peers in hiking warm-ups, cool-downs, and stretching
- Apply safe and environmentally conscious hiking techniques during hiking activities
- Participate in the planning of an advanced hike (map investigation, route selection, weather, emergency plan, group considerations, communication, and the “10 essentials”)
- Successfully participate in longer, all-day hiking experiences with map, compass, and GPS use
- Self-reflection and communication about hiking activities, routes, personal preparation, group dynamics, safety, and fitness for hiking
