Course Description

Explores fitness instruction and leadership in the field of aquatics. Incorporates principles of hydrodynamics and exercise to achieve total fitness. Required: Current Fitness Technology Student or instructor approval. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

A. Explore aquatic fitness employment opportunities.
B. Apply knowledge of exercise science and hydrodynamics to aquatic exercise.
C. Model quality aquatic instruction principles when teaching aquatic exercise to clients.
D. Design and implement aquatic exercise programming.
E. Utilize and enhance aquatic programming and teaching strategies learned through critical analysis of professionals in the industry.

      1. Aquatic certification and employment opportunities
      2. Target heart rate in an aquatics environment
      3. Exercise physiology in an aquatic setting (cardiovascular response, thermoregulation, special populations)
      4. Industry safety issues, standards, legal/liability issues (special populations/pool environment)
      5. Hydrodynamics and teaching in the water (differences from land)
      6. Aquatic exercise lesson plans and teaching demonstrations
      7. Benefits of water exercise
      8. Aquatic teaching styles, methods, and class program and content
      9. Principles of fitness including warm-up, cool down, stretching, training modes, intensity, etc.
      10. Music and equipment selection
      11. AEA and industry standards for aquatic programming and implementation
