Course Description

Continues the study of several substantive areas of the law. Includes development of legal analytical and communication skills. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

Areas of law covered will include criminal, contracts and property, and may include employment, insurance, corporations, juvenile and/or environmental.  A Core course, required for either a Paralegal Certificate or an Associate of Applied Science degree-Paralegal.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Utilize analytical skills when applying substantive and procedural law to fact situations.
  2. Use legal terminology effectively in the legal field.
  3. Use written or oral communication relating to substantive and procedural law as applied to fact patterns.
  4. Draft a written legal pleading and brief of a court opinion.
  5. Apply mathematical computation and analysis in common fact patterns using relevant legal principles.

Course Activities and Design

Course format is lecture with class discussion, as well as individual and small group problem solving.  It may include guest speaker(s) and a trip to a law library.  Homework will be primarily reading and application of law to problems presented.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Grades will be based upon assignments including:  homework completion, projects, class participation, mid-term exam and final exam

Demonstrate an understanding of the substantive areas covered  by application of relevant law to given fact patterns.
Participate in hands on introductory experience at law library with report of problem presented and materials consulted.
Contribute to class discussions and small group problem solving.
Write grammatically correct, cogently reasoned and authoritively supported analysis of problems/fact patterns presented on exams.
