Course Description
Addendum to Course Description
Explores the legal rights and responsibilities of landlords and tenants from the perspective of a legal professional representing the interests of clients.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon completion of the course students will be able to:

Describe the landlord/tenant relationship.

Identify and explain the rights and responsibilities of a landlord and tenant with concrete examples.

Explain the legal liability of landlords and tenants for injuries.

Describe and apply the law governing equal housing opportunities and housing discrimination.

Describe and apply the law governing rental agreements including evaluating and drafting agreements.

Identify and explain lawful means of terminating tenancies.

Use critical thinking skills to analyze whether an unlawful detainer or other wrongs against a tenant have been committed.
Course Activities and Design
Flexible dependent on needs of student population and preferred teaching style of instructor, but may include reading assignments; videos; lectures; guest speakers; small group projects and discussions; independent research; analysis of hypothetical problems; written reports; and student presentations.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
May include attendance and participation in class activities, written assignments, tests, individual research and writting, drafting relevant legal documents, and analysis of legal issues.

Legal liability of landlords and tenants for injuries and property damage to third-parties.
Equal housing opportunities and housing discrimination.

Legal process specific to landlord tenant relations.
Competencies & Skills
1. Locate and comprehend primary sources of landlord tenant law and process.
2. Critically evaluate potential claims against landlords and tenants.
3. Identify and evaluate options to resolve conflicts between landlords and tenants.
4. Draft enforceable rental agreements and leases.
