Course Description

Covers general care of patients in radiology department. Emphasizes radiographer's role regarding patient care with cardiac arrest, vital signs, accident victims, bedside procedures, aseptic techniques, contagious disease control, blood borne pathogens, venipuncture, administration of medication and contrast media reactions. Introduces fundamentals of urinary catheterization. Lab provides application of theory. Department permission required.

Addendum to Course Description

Methods of Patient Care (RAD 105) is required as part of the Radiologic Technology degree program. It is also a prerequisite for taking the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists examination for certification in Radiography. Transferability of credit depends entirely upon the institution to which the student wishes to transfer. Prior to enrolling in this course the student must be accepted in the Radiography Program and be enrolled in the first term.

Intended Outcomes for the course

  1. Assess patient conditions in a variety of situations and provide basic patient care.
  2. Integrate infection control practices in the workplace
  3. Apply knowledge of drug classifications, indications for use and aseptic technique to preparing and assisting other radiology health care personnel in drug and contrast medium administration.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  1. Given a variety of simulated situations, assess the patient’s condition and needs and respond appropriately.
  2. Given simulated situations involving patients requiring contrast media administration, determine the dose required based on patient’s weight in kilogram, prepare media using aseptic technique and assist in the administration.
  3. Apply the principles of aseptic technique to various simulated situations.

COURSE CONTENT :
The student will demonstrate understanding of the following themes, issues, concepts, and develop the following skills:

  1. Body Mechanics/Patient Transfer Techniques
  2. Infection Control
  3. Death and Dying
  4. Patient Assessment and Monitoring
  5. Pharmacology/Drug Preparation and Administration
  6. Venipuncture Technique
  7. Medical Emergencies
  8. Urinary Catheterization
  9. Bedside/Mobile Radiography


COMPETENCIES OR PROCESS SKILLS:

  1. Practice correct body mechanics and safe transfer of patients.
  2. Practice infection-control procedures and follow the principles of surgical asepsis.
  3. Perform patient assessment, monitor and record vital signs, and communicate knowledge of the electrocardiogram procedure.


Chart patient information using medical terminology.

  1. Prepare drugs and contrast media for administration to adults and pediatric patients.


Monitor patients for adverse responses to medications and provide appropriate patient care.
Provide specialized patient care to patients with colostomies, ileostomies and ureteroileostomies during imaging procedures.
Perform venipuncture using proper procedure on the training arms.
Provide emergency care to patients when indicated.
Place and remove a urinary catheter from a male and female mannequin.
Use special considerations/precautions while obtaining mobile radiographs or doing fluoroscopy in special care and surgical areas in the hospital.
