Course Description

Provides clinical education experience in an affiliated hospital radiology department under the supervision of a registered radiographer and radiologist. Includes knowledge and application of fluoroscopic equipment manipulation and operation, radiological and flouroscopic imaging procedures, radiation protection, medicolegal and ethical protocol, record keeping and patient care. Requires clinical competencies, objectives, performance assessment and attendance.

Addendum to Course Description

The student will learn the necessary skills that are required to function in the clinical area as a Radiologic Technologist and will demonstrate proper work ethic. This course is designed as Introductory Level I.
Radiography Clinic II (RAD 120) is required as part of the Radiologic Technology degree program. It is also a prerequisite for taking the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists examination for certification in Radiography. Transferability of credit depends entirely upon the institution to which the student wishes to transfer. Prior to enrolling in this course the student must be accepted in the Radiography Program and have successfully completed the required prerequisite courses.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Perform routine fluoroscopy procedures in a clinical setting under direct supervision of a registered technologist.

  • Perform routine radiographic exams in a clinical setting under direct supervision of a registered technologist.

  • Provide quality patient care in a clinical setting.

  • Operate standard radiographic equipment and apply radiation safety principles and practices in a clinical setting under direct supervision of a registered technologist.

Course Activities and Design

Level I INTRODUCTORY: The student will be required to gather information and formulate skills by observing and assisting the radiographer in radiologic examinations/ procedures, patient care, radiation protection, equipment manipulation, and infection control.  At the completion of RAD 120, the student must be able to progress to Level 2 in the Clinical Levels of Progression. This is required for enrollment into RAD 130. Direct supervision by a radiographer will be provided by the clinical affiliate at all times. Students’ radiographs must be reviewed by either a radiographer, physician or radiologist prior to releasing the patient or submitting the radiographs. Safety is extremely important, and is taught throughout this program. Pertinent safety points are noted in this course.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  1. Complete a minimum number of diagnostic examinations in the clinic that correlate with RAD 101-102.
  2. Complete (2) clinical rotations with satisfactory evaluation scores.
  3. Complete the exercises in the RAD 120 clinical syllabus, the room objectives and fluoroscopic procedure presentation successfully.
  4. Continue to adhere to the program attendance policy.

Competencies or Process Skills:

  1. Prepare medications and assist with administration.
  2. Locate the department’s emergency drug box and describe its contents.
  3. Practice proper sterile technique.
  4. Use effective communication strategies with all types of patients and healthcare personnel.
  5. Identify various components on fluoroscopy equipment and review documentation addressing fluoroscopic procedure protocols, equipment exposure rates, and dose limiting activities.
  6. Set automated and manual exposure controls.
  7. Select and use grids, correctly.
  8. Locate and describe the function of the various X-ray console controls.
  9. Locate anode and cathode end of x-ray tube.
