Course Description

Provides the means for a certified radiographer (A.R.R.T.) to learn the necessary knowledge and skills to become certified as an A.R.R.T. mammographer. This will enable the radiographer to understand the requirements and procedures for the new regulations in mammography.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: 

  • Analyze a patient’s history to determine proper Mammographic procedures.
  • Take and evaluate high quality Mammographic images.
  • Perform standard quality control tests and procedures related to Mammographic imaging.

This course has been designed to facilitate the student’s understanding of mammography and will cover the complexities of high quality mammography and the early detection of breast cancer. The content follows the required content specifications for the Mammographer certification examination sponsored by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.

Lecture-discussion format with laboratory demonstrations for enhancement will be the method of instruction.

Various types of visual aids, reference texts, guest lectures, images and small group work projects will be utilized to aid the student in orientation to breast imaging.

Student may be asked to present information from reference texts, journals or case studies to enhance the understanding of the course materials.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  1. Evaluate the diagnostic quality of Mammographic images. 
  2. Label mammary anatomy and pathology of diagrams and mammograms. 
  3. Simulate the correct positioning for a routine Mammographic exam.
