Course Description

Covers intermediate elements of technical theatre directly associated with current performing arts production(s). Includes practical hands-on experience in a leadership role for one or more of the following: scenery, lighting, projection, sound, stage management and properties management. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

SAC recommends this course for students wishing to further explore technical theatre roles in scenery, lighting, projection, media, sound, stage management and properties management. 

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students will be able to:

  • Perform and implement script analysis to glean visual information that applies to one of the following areas: scenery, lighting, props, projection, media, stage management and/or sound.
  • Apply technical theatre skills and knowledge as a team leader to one or more of the following areas: scenery, lighting, props, projection, media, stage management and/or sound.
  • Assess the pros and cons of each of the five traditional stage types (proscenium, thrust, arena, black box, and flexible/found space) to determine staging needs and implementation of technical support required.
  • Produce scaled ground plan, section, and elevation drawings.
  • Produce two or more of the following: scaled working model, painted scenery, scenic elements, properties elements, light plot, sound plot, prompt book, production book, projection and/or media plot.

Course Activities and Design

Activities May Include:

•Participate in weekly main-stage production meetings

•Lead a team project

•Individual project

•Online discussions

•Videos

•Presentation of exemplar works

•Hands-on participation as a leader in TA production

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Assessment shall include:

     •An examination based on text readings and lecture materials

     •A cumulative Team project 

     •Evaluation of participation in current TA Production

     •Self Assessment/Evaluation paper

Understand the theatre facility, its pros & cons:

•Proscenium stage
•Arena stage

Demonstrate safety & proficiency with theatrical equipment in at least two of the following areas:

•Scene shop & stage safety etiquette                                                                                                          •Scenery                                                                                                                                            •Properties                                                                                                                                              •Stage Management                                                                                                                                        •Lighting                                                                                                                                                  •Sound                                                                                                                                            •Projection                                                                                                                                            •Media

Demonstrate proficiency with Visual Communication in technical theatre in at least two of the following areas:

•Ground plans  
•Sections  
•Construction drawings                                                                                                                •Properties Plot                                                                                                                                  •Master Cue Sheet                                                                                                                                  •Light Plot                                                                                                                                                          •Sound Plot                                                                                                                                                      •Projection Plot

Participate as a small teamer Leader for the main-stage production in one of the following areas: scenery, lighting, props, projection, media, stage management and/or sound.
