Course Description
Intended Outcomes for the course
The course teaches the theory and techniques of stage make-up and includes work in specific phases of the make-up process. Stage make-up is an art. Much time is needed to develop the techniques and touch, important elements to good make-up design. Time will be spent in class on lecture and demonstration as well as for practicing techniques..
Knowledge of the relationship between stage make-up, the character and the stage are essential in creating the best make-up. Some of the class time will be spent on lecture and discussion of these points. Also, it would be advantageous to sit in on rehearsals of theatre productions in various theatre to analyze these relationships first hand.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
Competency will be determined by the in-class execution of skills on a class by-class basis, as well as a final project. Grades will be determined by attendance, daily class projects, outside research, and applied midterm and a final make-up project.

1.0 FACIAL STRUCTURE
Instructional Goal
The goal is to be familiar with the structure of the human face.
1.1 Bones and hollows - touching face and muscles
1.2 Skull painting
2.0 MAKE-UP PAINTING TECHNIQUES
Instructional Goal
The goal is the understand the painting techniques necessary for stage make-up.
2.1 Shading techniques for folds and pouches (soft shading) focus on muscles
2.2 Shading techniques for bringing out sharpness in the face - focus on bone
structure
2.3 Basic make-up enhancing the face as is for the best presentation on stage.
2.4 Accenting the vertical (thin)
2.5 Accenting the horizontal (fat)
2.6 Shading techniques for aging
2.7 Techniques for depicting mood
3.0 TOOLS FOR MAKE-UP
Instructional Goal
The goal is to introduce and familiarize students with the tools used for stage make-up.
