Course Description

Provides advanced clinical education experience in an affiliated hospital Catheterization Lab department under the supervision of a Registered Technologist and Radiologist. Includes application of equipment manipulation and operation, understanding and application of imaging parameters, safety, medicolegal and ethical protocols, record keeping and patient care.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1.  Perform advanced Catheterization Lab examinations with minimal supervision using fundamental skills and safety precautions.

Course Activities and Design

Perform all skills with independence and use critical thinking skills to handle increasingly complex situations within the Cath Lab department. The student is required to continue to perform competencies required to qualify for the ARRT VI or CI Examination.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

A. Complete VIR examinations (clinical competencies).
B. Complete the exercises in the clinical syllabus.

A. Cross sectional anatomy and vascular anatomy correlation to pathology
B. Understanding advanced image parameters
C. Understanding safety issues performing anesthesia for MR patients
D. Cath Lab Hardware correlation to advanced imaging
E. Parameter differences between vendors and equipment type
F. Understanding of factors affecting image quality and contrast
COMPETENCIES OR PROCESS SKILLS
A. Demonstrate understanding of cross-sectional anatomy and vascular anatomy.
B. Demonstrate knowledge of equipment and precautions required for anesthesia cases.
C. Demonstrates understanding of safety issues involving anesthesia
for conscious sedation Cath Lab imaging.
D. Demonstrates understanding of protocol parameter choices for varied exam types.
E. Demonstrate knowledge of advanced image formation principles.
F. Demonstrate knowledge of factors affecting image quality and contrast use                            G. Demonstrate knowledge of factors affecting patient care and safety.                                       H.  Complete remaining required VIR exam competencies and repetitions.
