Course Description

Develops knowledge and manipulative skills using the Gas Metal Arc Welding - Pulse transfer process on common mild steel and aluminum joints in all positions. Covers safety, users, nomenclature, equipment operation and set up and shut down procedures. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

This is an outcome based course utilizing a lecture / lab format. This course includes classroom discussion, videotapes, theoretical concepts, lab demonstrations and technical skills. Course outcomes include; theoretical concepts, layout, fabrication, oxy-fuel cutting, safety and environmental awareness, communication, computations and human relations.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

The student will be assessed on his/her ability to demonstrate the development of course outcomes. The methods of assessment may include one or more of the following: oral or written examinations, quizzes, written assignments, visual inspection, welding task performance, safe work habits and work relations.

COURSE CONTENT:

Function safely in the PCC Welding Laboratory

  • Understand and practice personal safety by using proper protective gear

  • Understand and practice power tool safety

  • Understand and practice equipment safety

  • Understand and maintain a safe work area

  • Understand and practice fire prevention

  • Access and explain the importance of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)

Apply math and science concepts related to GMAW-P

  • Explain the purpose of Pulsing with GMAW

  • Identify the types of shielding gases used for Pulsed GMAW

  • Explain plasma formation in the Arc

  • Explain the use of Diatomic and Tri-atomic Gases with Argon or Helium

  • Explain stabilizing the Arc for GMAW of steel

  • Explain when to use Argon-Helium vs. Ar-CO2 vs. Ar-O2 shielding gases

  • Identify the oxidation potential of Argon rich gas mixtures

  • Compare pulsed GMAW of Steel vs. Aluminum

  • Explain synergic system power sources and waveform control
