Course Description

Introduces pipe fitting concepts and techniques to fabricate pipe spools for the maritime industry.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Function safely in a welding shop and a shipyard environment.
  2. Interpret blueprints to lay out, prepare, and assemble a pipe system.
  3. Create a material list for a maritime welding project.
  4. Calculate takeoffs.
  5. Sketch spools to “see” takeoffs.
  6. Operate oxy fuel cutting equipment (OFC) and pneumatic tools according to industry standards.
  7. Fabricate pipe spools using introductory pipe fabrication techniques.

Course Activities and Design

Each concept will be delivered via a combination of lectures and videos followed by practical demonstrations and hands-on application in the welding lab.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Oral or written examinations, quizzes, written assignments, visual inspection, welding tests and task performance.
