Course Description
Covers fitting pipe utilizing butt joints for the maritime industry.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to:
- Function safely in a welding shop and a shipyard environment.
- Interpret blueprints to lay out, prepare, and assemble a pipe system.
- Create a material list for a maritime welding project.
- Calculate takeoffs. Sketch spools to “see” takeoffs.
- Operate oxy fuel cutting equipment and pneumatic tools according to industry standards.
- Fabricate butt joints using more advanced pipe fabrication techniques.
Course Activities and Design
Each concept will be delivered via a combination of lectures and videos followed by practical demonstrations and hands-on application in the welding lab.

Oral or written examinations, quizzes, written assignments, visual inspection, welding tests and task performance.

- Function safely in the PCC Welding Shop and a Shipyard Environment.
- Understand and practice personal safety by using proper protective equipment (PPE)
- Understand, promote and adhere to a Safety-First culture by following OSHA safety guidelines and requirements at all times.
- Understand and maintain a safe work area
- Recognize and report dangerous electrical and air/gas hose connections
- Understand and practice fire prevention
- Understand first aid protocol in case of an emergency.
- Understand confined and enclosed spaces.
- Understand sitemaps and muster stations.
- Understand fire hydrant locations throughout the shipyard.
- Understand injury reporting procedure.
- Understand ANSI safety color codes.
- Understand and practice power tool safety
- Understand and practice equipment safety for welding, oxy-fuel and carbon arc cutting systems
- Operate oxy fuel cutting equipment (OFC) and pneumatic tools according to industry standards.
- Demonstrate correct setup, operation and shutdown procedures for OFC and pneumatic tools
- Interpret blueprints to accurately lay out, prepare, and assemble weld joints
- Interpret lines, symbols, views and notes
- Use isometric pipe drawings
- Lay out material per specifications
- Assemble project per specifications
- Demonstrate pipe fabrication techniques
- Calculate Socket weld takeoffs
- Calculate Offsets (single and multi run systems)
- Calculate Rolling offsets
- Fabricate pipe spools with associated fittings
- Apply visual examination principles and practices in accordance with ASME Section IX.
- Evaluate dimensional accuracy based upon industry standards
