Course Description

Introduces land use zoning and international Commercial building codes. Includes selected portions of the code. Prerequisites: WR 115, RD 115 and MTH 20 or equivalent placement test scores. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

This course is a required for an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Building Construction Technology,  AAS BCT Construction Management Option.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Navigate commercial building codes.

Interpret commercial building codes to determine if, when, and how they apply to a construction assembly or condition.

Course Activities and Design

  • Course materials will be presented in a lecture and discussion format, using multimedia presentations (slides, overheads, videos) showing examples of code applications in various buildings, and tables from code books.
  • Discussions will be supplemented by handouts that summarize highlights of the codes, due to the extensive amount of information in the codes.
  • Weekly assignments will provide an opportunity for students to apply class information to a construction assembly or condition.
  • Midterm and final exam questions cover a summary of information from the Building Codes.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Required skills are assessed in the classroom through small group evaluation, in class assignments, quizzes and homework review. Instructor created exams evaluate the ability of individual students to locate pertinent information in the code, interpret for relevancy, and apply as appropriate.
