Course Description
Introduces the principles of air conditioning. Includes air conditioning components, component functions, and servicing Caterpillar air conditioning systems. Requires a dealer letter indicating secured internship at a participating Caterpillar Dealership. Prerequisites: DST 114.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Service Caterpillar air-conditioning systems using appropriate service literature and following safety protocols.
Course Activities and Design
This is an outcome-based course utilizing a lecture / lab format. This course includes videos, assignments, demonstrations, lectures, and hands on learning.

- 300 Series Excavator Air Conditioning System
- Learn and practice facility and equipment safety
- Explain the Basic Air Conditioning Principle of Operations
- Identify A/C system components and explain operation
- Hook up and use the Manifold Gauge in system diagnostics
- Use the Refrigerant Identification Station to identify unknown refrigerant
- Operate Refrigerant Recovery, Recycling, and Charging Equipment
- Use the Leak Detector and Refrigerant Dye to find leaks in the system
- Perform A/C System Diagnosis and Repair
- Discuss the use of Flushing Equipment to flush system components
- Identify components and perform the electrical diagnostic procedure on the 300 Series Excavator A/C system.
