Students will:

• Define and classify areas of developmental disabilities.
• Be familiar with the I.E.P. process.
• Describe and practice teaching techniques.
• Describe and practice diagnostic procedures.
• Identify achievement levels intellectual functioning, goals and objectives.
• Describe biological and psychosocial causes.
• Explore transitional programs for career and vocational preparation.
• Discuss family issues, rights and support services.
• Demonstrate the ability to use reason, decision making, and complex problem solving skills.

Students' progress will be evaluated and criteria for assigning a course grade by the following tools: assignments, chapter questions and discussion, special interest paper or debate, participation in group and class discussion, thirty-five motivating activities, attendance and final exam.

Students will:

• Write chapter reviews.
• Participate in group activities.
• Write or debate an area of special interest in Special Education.
• Write report on guest speakers and field trips.
• Present five current events.
• Write thirty-five motivating activities for students with developmental disabilities.
• Complete take home final.

CULTURE AWARENESS: Graduates of Portland Community College should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the varieties of human cultures, perspectives, and forms of expressions as well as their own cultures complexities.

PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE: Graduates of Portland Community College should demonstrate mastery in a discipline of profession at a level appropriate to program and transfer requirements through the application of concepts, skills, processes, and technology in the performance of authentic tasks that enhance community involvement and employability.

SELF-REFLECTION: Graduates of Portland Community College should be self-appraising in applying the knowledge and skills they have learned, examining and evaluating personal beliefs and comparing them with the beliefs of others.
