Course Description
Covers speaking, listening, reading, and writing strategies for taking timed tests, including the TOEFL and IELTS. Audit available.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon completion of the course students should be able to:
- Apply notetaking skills during academic lectures.
- Apply reading strategies to deepen one's understanding of advanced academic texts.
- Apply organizational strategies when writing and revising college level essays.
- Apply organizational strategies to prepare and deliver short speeches.
- Apply appropriate test-taking strategies to the TOEFL exam and other timed tests.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
- Students will demonstrate critical listening by taking notes and answering comprehension questions.
- Students will be tested regularly on previously unseen readings and expected to apply reading strategies including skimming, scanning, identifying main ideas and details, and making inferences.
- Write a minimum of three essays that exhibit appropriate organization, language style, and grammar
- Organize and deliver at least three one-minute speeches on prescribed topics
