Course Description

Explores the foundational skills and techniques involved in Hatha Yoga instruction. Emphasizes pranayama and the main categories of asana. Covers alignment, adjustments, modifications and teaching methods. Prerequisites: Department approval required, and (WR 115 and RD 115) or IRW 115 and MTH 20 or equivalent placement. Prerequisites/concurrent: PE 283, and (PE 182K, PE 182L, PE 182J, or PE 182I). Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students will be able to:

  1. Develop and lead routines in Hatha Yoga for a generally healthy adult population.

  2. Apply effective teaching strategies in Hatha Yoga instruction.

  3. Instruct individuals and groups in asana and pranayama techniques.

  4. Assess and modify individual client needs based on knowledge of anatomy and alignment principles.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

  • Asana and modifications in each of the main categories: seated, standing, hip openers, arm balances, twists and inversions.

  • Basic pranayama.

  • Asana selection and modification in group instruction.

  • Developing sequences of yoga asana and pranayama.

  • Cueing methods in yoga instruction.

  • Critical analysis of Hatha Yoga instruction.

  • Teaching demonstration.

  • Anatomy and physiology as they apply to asana and pranayama.

  • Selection of music and equipment.

  • Health screening of participants.

  • Use of yoga equipment.

  • Safety considerations.
