Course Description

Introduces the concept of health information management and health informatics including the components of content, use and structure of healthcare data along with information keeping practices in both paper and electronic systems. Corequisites: HIM 120. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Describe an acute care health record according to organizational policies, external regulations and standards.
  2. Describe the roles and responsibilities of various providers and disciplines, to support administrative documentation requirements.
  3. Describe policies and procedures to ensure the accuracy and integrity of health data.
  4. Explain the reliability and accuracy of secondary data sources.
  5. Define types of physician queries.
  6. Identify retention and destruction policies of health information. 

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Students will demonstrate these learning outcomes by these tasks conducted individually and in cooperation with other students:

  1. Answer theoretical and application questions on information covered in the lecture, graded assignments and reading assignments.
  2. Show competence in completing library and database research on an assigned health care topic.
