Course Description

Presents an analysis of interior design and furnishings from the 19th century to the present. Includes contemporary usage as well as the mixing of period furniture styles. Prerequisites: WR 115, RD 115 and MTH 20 or equivalent placement test scores.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Identify historic furniture and interior styles from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries.
  2. Inform others about historic interiors using research and presentation skills.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  1. Compile a study notebook illustrating historic interiors and furniture styles of Western Civilizations. Use professional vocabulary to label illustrations.
  2. Demonstrate ability to recognize and analyze historic interiors and furniture by taking two exams. 
  3. Present a written and oral report of the design work of an influential interior/furniture designer. 
  4. Participate/ contribute to class discussions

  1. The student will develop the ability to analyze interior elements in terms of historic reference, line, pattern, color, motif and materials.
  2. The student will develop ability to use written, visual and oral presentation skills.
