Course Description

Develops advanced simultaneous interpretation skills from ASL to English. Incorporates high register public speaking techniques into interpreting. Prerequisites: Program admission and department permission.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Produce a meaning-based simultaneous interpretation of the main points and supporting details of a given ASL message into English.

  • Analyze language use in high register settings such as business, government, consultations, and job interviews.

  • Apply metalinguistical knowledge to produce an English interpretation appropriate to a high register setting.  

  • Describe the needs and perspectives of consumers in a given scenario, including cultural and setting-specific nuances.

Course Activities and Design

Course activities include student presentations, interpreting, self-analysis, and peer review.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Students will be assess on presentations, assignments, and interpretations.
