Course Description

Explores and defines the technology and creation of augmented reality. Examines uses and trends using this technology. Includes the creation of simple projects that demonstrate the production and use of augmented reality. Prerequisites: WR 115, RD 115 and MTH 20 or equivalent placement test scores. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of he course students should be able to :

  • Describe what augmented reality is, and describe current and upcoming trends.
  • Identify types of augmented reality (geolocation, marker, markerless), platforms and devices.
  • Create a sample of marker based augmented reality by augmenting a business card or other object with a simple representation of chosen media type (video playback, 3d model, 3d animation, etc.)

Course Activities and Design

The material in this course will be presented in a classroom lecture/discussion/demonstration format, and in class hands-on exercises.There will be short assignments weekly, which may be partially completed in-class. Also, a longer assignment, which demonstrates techniques and skills, developed in the course.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Projects will be the major criteria for evaluation. Emphasis will be placed on creativity, presentations, meeting assigned deadlines, and participation in critiques. Additional methods of assessment may include quizzes, exercises, assignments, and attendance.
