Course Description

Covers techniques to increase power and control in the diagonal stride, speed control in varied downhill conditions, varied turning maneuvers, and beginning skating and telemark skiing. Recommended: PE 184A. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate skiing skills to improve physical conditioning.
  2. Demonstrate using linked turns and control on beginning and intermediate terrain.
  3. Demonstrate preparedness for varying weather conditions and emergencies in an alpine environment.

Course Activities and Design

An orientation session will be held at the college to collect fees, distribute tickets and answer questions.  At the ski area,
students will be placed in small classes with other students of similar ability.  Classes will be conducted each of the five weeks
on snow at the ski area.  Lab/practice time will be available to supplement class time with the instructor, and independent
practice is of the utmost importance.  In addition to skiing skills, safety and skier etiquette will also be emphasized.
Appropriate clothing for protection from the weather must be provided by the student.
 

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Student's grades will be will be based on:
     1.   Attendance - attendance at five classes is required for
          to pass.
     2.   Active participation and effort in class.

     3.   Demonstration of skills learned.
 

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

1.0  SKIING SKILLS
Instructional Goals:
Refine the student's understanding and application of balance,
pressure motions, edging and rhythm/flow maneuvers outlined in the
PSIA American Teaching System for Nordic Skiing, applied
appropriately to the following maneuvers:
Objectives:
     1.1  Review diagonal stride and double poling
     1.2  Introduce double pole with a kick
     1.3  Maneuver transitions and timing changes
     1.4  Speed control movements, climbing movements
     1.5  Beginning ski skating maneuvers
     1.6  Beginning telemark turns
     1.7  Increasing quality mileage
2.0  SAFETY ASPECTS
Instructional Goal:
Familiarize students with important safety aspects of the sport.
Objectives:
     2.1  Introduce students to the Oregon Skier's Responsibility
          Code.
     2.2  Orient the students to ski equipment and the proper
          operation of the binding system.
     2.3  Teach students the safe use of the all lift systems,
          including chairlifts and surface tows, if applicable.
     2.4  Deal with varying weather and snow conditions and proper
          preparation for outdoor winter activity.
     2.5  Introduce students to a variety of terrain as their
          skills allow.
     2.6  Teach speed control using turn shape as a controlling
          variable.
3.0  AWARENESS/APPRECIATION OF SKIING
Instructional Goal: 
Develop in the students an appreciation of skiing as a lifetime
sport.
Objectives:
     3.1  Create a positive learning environment that allows
          learning to occur and individual student confidence to
          be developed.
     3.2  Help students to understand the importance of physical
          fitness to maximum enjoyment of athletic activity.
     3.3  Develop an excitement about and appreciation of skiing
          that will motivate the students to participate in skiing
          as a lifetime activity.
