A pre-course swimming and water safety skills assessment will be conducted on the first day of class to determine that student is at the proper level for class admittance.

1. Demonstrate the qualities of an American Red Cross representative.
2. Demonstrate the required skills at an acceptable level of performance.
3. Apply course material regarding planning, conducting, and evaluating Swimming and Water Safety courses, maintaining course records, and ensuring safety of participants.
4. Acquire knowledge of, and become familiar with, a wide variety of course related materials.
5. Analyze a participant’s progress and provide corrective feedback and encouragement.
6. Obtain knowledge of employment opportunities in the field.
7. Acquire skills necessary to teach all levels of the IPAP program, the Learn-to-swim program, Community Water Safety, and the Water Safety Instructor Aide course.

COMPETENCIES/SKILLS:

1. Participate in class lecture, video, and self-study guide to complete certification for the F.I.T. course.
2. Creating and maintaining an ongoing notebook.
3. Planning several practice teaching assignments by writing out lesson plans, and block plans.
4. Conducting several practice teaching scenarios, both one-on-one and group settings.
5. Evaluating classmates and own practice teaching skills, both individual and group settings, using various evaluation techniques.
6. Observing many off-campus swimming classes, and turning in reports detailing findings.
7. Participate in classroom discussions, demonstrations, and activities.
8. Describing information learned from reading assignments, including learning theory, customizing classes for special populations, and teaching principles.
9. Performing a variety of swimming and water safety skills during the pre-course session.
10. Improving, throughout the term, all strokes and skills that are not quite up to standard.
11. Exploring and becoming familiar additional ARC courses and programs, including: Longfellow’s Whale Tales, and Safety Training for Swim Coaches.
